The Clan Tartan

The normal accepted "Clan" tartan is as shown on the outside cover of 'An Outline of the History of Clan Macnab and its Lands' and is the one in weave at Loch Carron and other mills in similar sett and colour, or close.
The thread count with full count at the pivots is:
Green/l6, Crimson 2, Green 2, Crimson 2, Red 16, Crimson 
2, Red 16, Crimson 12, Green 14, Crimson 2, Green/2
The structure of this tartan is identical with that of the Black Watch; but by the translation of the colours, the most subdued of tartans (Black Watch) becomes one of the most striking (Macnab)

The Chief's Tartan


There is another Macnab tartan, considered to be personal to the Chief and his family. It is as worn by Francis (16th Chief) in his famous portrait by Sir Henry Raeburn, RA. 
This is shown on the inside cover of 'An Outline of the History of Clan Macnab and its Lands'.
Thread count with full count at the pivots is as follows:
Crimson 48, Green 2, Azure 2, Green 4, Red 48.

For those interested in purchasing Macnab tartan or any of its variants, Trustee Hamish Macnab of Barravorich is a Consultant with Albion Highland Ltd, suppliers of tartan by the metre in wool, silk and other material. It has been arranged that 15% of their trade price will be donated to the Macnab Memorial Trust from all orders placed with Albion Highland Ltd for Macnab tartan (i.e. the cloth) for whatever purpose it is required. This can be supplied in varying weights and sett sizes from mill stocks; or they will arrange production of special weaves, usually in wool or silk.
